Todd's Biography
Todd Erbst graduated with his degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1993. As a former track and field athlete, his immediate interests included running biomechanics with special focus on foot pathomechanics and custom foot orthotic intervention. Upon moving to Colorado Springs, CO he became a skier and rock climber and treated many athletes within these disciplines. He also began to specialize in manual therapy through coursework within the North American Orthopedic Manual Therapy Institute. In 1998 Todd attended several seminars by Gary Gray and Vern Gabetta where he began to realize the potential of functional movement pattern retraining for both rehabilitation and sports performance.
He moved to Pennsylvania in 1999 to manage an outpatient orthopedic and sports medicine physical therapy clinic. He also received his national pole vault coaching certification and began coaching men's and women's high school pole vault. Upon relocating to Raleigh in 2003, Todd worked as a PT at Progress Physical Therapy and coached the pole vault for 6 years at Broughton High School. He also organized and ran summer pole vault camps and clinics. During this same time he designed and manufactured a pole vault training device which he sold nationally and internationally from 2008 to 2013. While coaching, he worked extensively with video analysis for vaulters, runners and jumpers to maximize their efficiency. He received his Level 1 coaching certification for all track and field events through USATF in 2008.
Todd also began working with dancers at the Carolina Ballet in 2003. He quickly realized that his knowledge of biomechanics could benefit dancers within all disciplines including Highland, Irish and Modern. He uses his knowledge of foot mechanics and orthotic fabrication skills to successfully modify technique and pointe shoes to alleviate pain and maximize foot alignment/positioning. He continues to assist the dancers at approximately 15 of their performances each season. He has led many educational workshops within the Triangle for dancers of all ages focusing on maximizing biomechanics efficiency and injury prevention.
Todd has continued to enhance his manual therapy skills through coursework in the Maitland Australian Approach and the McKenzie Method. He received certification in Trigger Point Dry Needling in 2015 and is currently taking coursework through the Postural Restoration Institute. While he enjoys treating elite and professional athletes, he also loves to work with younger athletes, weekend warriors, recreational enthusiasts and folks who simply stay active. In his free time, Todd enjoys hiking and rock climbing with his wife and daughter as well as cycling, loudspeaker design/fabrication and gardening.
